Skim Coat and Acid Staining on Old Concrete

Skim coat or Micro Toppings:

If you have a concrete floor that has had an old glue down carpet on it that has to be replaced, and you are looking for a product that is concrete like (without having to replace the existing concrete) and the cost of doing that labor intensive chore. Micro or skim coats have evolved 100 years in the last 5 with the introduction of polymer modified cement. With proper installation Polymer modified cement is not having the delamination problems that has plagued epoxics for years. Basically the only way to get our topping off is with a jackhammer, taking the concrete sub floor with it. The stuff is great.
Renovations or situations where acid just can't be applied to an existing concrete floor because of contaminants that will not allow the penetration of acid or dyes is where a topping shines. Today's toppings are stronger and virtullaly wear free. Some commercial applications prefer toppings to acid on concrete.
As mentioned in the previous section acid color choices are increasing, but in today's color pallet, vibrancy is what is wanted in some cases. Blues, reds, greens and yellows are possible in topping either with the use of dyes in an interior application to the use of integral colors for both interior or exterior. Acid staining of toppings is also possible; however, it will have a somewhat different appearance that acid on concrete. The application of acid on topping is very tricky and should only be done by an experienced profesional.
Common uses for toppings: old weathered basements, patios, garages, outdoor entrance ways, foyers, pool decks commercial mall renovations and new construction. Toppings can be used in the horizontal and vertical planes. Rob will assess sub floor condition in order to determine whether acid on concrete is applicable or topping will have to be the way to go.
